But what about the idea of education for education's sake? Isn't that what college is supposed to be about - making you smarter, more savvy, more cosmopolitan? Ideally, yes. However, in today's world, anyone who wishes to become smarter and savvier does not need to attend college. The Internet can provide you with an amazing low cost or free education.

You can also work on your accent at home: find some audio (with a transcription) with a native American speaker (podcast, movie etc.) and repeat aloud after him. Practice often - preferably on a daily basis - and don't forget that it's about imitating, not only repeating aloud without trying to speak like an American.

I don't believe you need to be an extrovert to be a good presenter. Steve Jobs is regarded as one of world's best business presenters without being a hyper-energetic speaker. However, regardless of your starting point, you do need variety in your presentation.

If ever there was a speech that needed to be practiced, then your TED speech is it. Don't you dare just run through it a few times in front of the bathroom mirror. Instead, pull together some of your friends who won't be afraid to give you honest feedback and deliver the speech to them. You can't do this just once. Do it at least a couple of times - the more the better.

Continuing education plays a big role in keeping your skills current. Fans consume entertainment very differently now than they did when Madonna started topping the charts. MTV videos and the radio were the only games in town then. Now musicians compete online, with iPads, iPods, satellite radio, social media, DVD audio, etc. so you have to stay up on all the current formats and distribution vehicles. In business you should regularly attend trade shows, conferences, read trade journals, white papers, blogs, watch Join the TED discussion, etc. to keep up with the latest trends, tools and technologies in your category.

(a) Although we are stressed out and have higher standards, we still don't spend as much time as our ancestors did on survival -- 40 hours a week is adequate for most people. This gives us a lot more free time in which to pursue our hobbies; as much as we spend on our jobs, if we choose to do so.
