A TED talk is a place for you to take risks. Let's be honest about this. In this life, you'll probably only get one shot at a presentation like this. Step out on that limb and do something different. Make sure that your presentation is going to be memorable.

2) What is everyone else talking about? You could, of course, simply parrot what everyone else is already saying. But what if, instead, you came up with a powerful, meaningful, but perhaps contrary opinion? This might be good exercise for your brain- just to practice adopting- and discussing- different viewpoints on the same issue. If you watch TED talks- do you agree with their premise? Why or why not? When you read top blogs in your industry- what would say the same or differently? Sharpening your own sense of critical thinking can give you new insights on core ideas and issues.

In another of my favorite Link to Carl Kruse on TED William Kamkwamba shares with us his tale of triumph as a 14 year old boy challenged by hunger and poverty in search of an education. His parting gift, "Trust yourself and believe. Whatever happened don't give up." There is always more to do and more to learn. Push yourself to be better in 2010 and challenge yourself to improve the status quo.

Spencer Wells' TED Talk has serious implications on the modern world. It challenges old ideas about race differences. Wells' results may shorten the psychological gap of differences between groups of people by establishing a common beginning. This new genetic understanding can make the skill of interrelation a bit easier because people have a connection, if only in the biological sense.

Stacy and Clinton saw the two sides to Jessica as they watched the What Not to Wear secret footage together. While Jessica often wore a lot of outlandish, costume-y clothes, she also had days where she just looked frumpy in boring and ill-fitting clothes. Jessica explained that there were times when she just couldn't find anything in her closet that looked good or fit right, and so she'd just give up and throw on anything.

I have been assigning five minute presentations to students on and off for twenty years. When my students challenged me to improvise a five minute presentation, I took a breath, collected my thoughts and spoke for about 4 minutes and 50 seconds. I knew how long I wanted to speak and I had an internal representation of that unit of time, conditioned by years of paying attention to it. Showing off for my students was a bonus.

I realised that none of the new seven wonders, see Wikipedia for full details, as recently voted for by a sort of public referendum, were in fact modern ones. Sure the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro was opened in October 1931, but the subject matter and presentation of the statue is hardly modern.
